POSITION:                   Graphic Design Internship

HOURS:                         Approximately 125 hours between December 4, 2017, and January 12, 2018

COMPENSATION:       $15/hour

Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site is preparing to launch a new educational outreach initiative, “Long Ago in Long Beach.” The goal of this program is to expose young students to local history through a series of engaging social science workshops delivered in after-school daycare settings around Long Beach, and simultaneously to engage their families through extension activities that can be done at home.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Working closely with the museum’s education director and marketing specialist, the Graphics Design Intern will create the look and feel of the “Long Ago in Long Beach” program’s brand and materials. Specifically, the Graphics Design Intern will design colorful student workbooks (from developed content) for second- and third-grade participants, plus marketing materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  We are looking for a bright, energetic, and creative individual with a flair for desktop publishing. The ideal candidate will be currently enrolled in (or recent graduate of) a Graphics Design program at an accredited educational institution, proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, and have experience designing youth-oriented educational or marketing materials. He/she must also be a self-starter who is comfortable working on projects without direct supervision, is able to work collaboratively and handle feedback graciously, possesses outstanding communication skills (written, verbal, and visual), and has an interest in local history and/or museum education.

THE MUSEUM: In public-private partnership with the City of Long Beach, the Rancho Los Cerritos Foundation operates Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site, an 1844 Monterey Colonial style adobe on 4.7 acres of land. The museum focuses on the interpretation of rural life styles and economic development in Southern California between the 1840s and 1940s. Rancho Los Cerritos is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. for public tours of the house and gardens. Special events and programs throughout the year.
