Application Deadline: April 30, 2018

The Getty intern at Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site has an opportunity to explore curatorial opportunities at a mid-size museum; enhance research and communication skills; acquire experience developing museum exhibits; and work closely with volunteers and museum staff. The intern will also participate in Getty-sponsored seminars and trips.

Eligibility and Qualifications:
The Getty internships are intended for outstanding students who are members of groups underrepresented in museums and visual arts organizations, including but not limited to individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent. Eligibility for this internship is limited to currently enrolled undergraduates who reside in or attend college in Los Angeles County. Candidates can be sought from all areas of undergraduate study and are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the visual arts.

Position Description: Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site is seeking a curatorial intern for Summer 2018. The intern will assist with changing museum exhibits at Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site. The intern will spend a semester actively learning about museum curation and exhibit design. This includes the multiple stages of exhibit development, historical and contextual research related to objects, collections care and maintenance, and basic skills for museum collections management software. It is mandatory that selected interns attend Learning Community events. The intern will complete their course of work-study with a developing understanding of what working in a museum is like, which will be useful for students with a potential professional interest in the field. The intern will be able to move forward in their academic and professional careers with demonstrated work experience they can build upon and apply in future roles. Furthermore, because the Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site has been a long-standing cornerstone in the Los Angeles County community and cultural life, the intern will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of arts and culture in their community and can begin to envision how they may foster this relationship in their future careers.
