Port of Long Beach Sponsorship Supports Rancho Los Cerritos’ Untold Legacies Exhibit Programming and First-Ever Cowboy Festival

LONG BEACH, California – Today, Rancho Los Cerritos (RLC) announces its plans for the first-ever Cowboy Festival on June 21, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. In April, Rancho Los Cerritos received a $10,000 sponsorship from the Port of Long Beach to produce a dynamic series of programs in support of its well-received exhibition, Untold Legacies: Rethinking the American Cowboy. This series features artist-led workshops and a first-ever “Cowboy Festival,” in collaboration with RLC’s exhibit partner, Urban Saddles, a fellow nonprofit organization. The festival also commemorates Juneteenth and provides a unique opportunity for community connections and cultural appreciation.
The Cowboy Festival at Rancho Los Cerritos is for audiences of all ages,” commented Alison Bruesehoff, Executive Director of RLC. Through our partnership Urban Saddles, we are broadening our reach to include their audience, visitors from across Los Angeles, and guests who might not otherwise have known about the Rancho.” The festival celebrates urban cowboy culture and is aligned with Rancho’s Untold Legacies exhibition, which spotlights the contributions of Black, Latino, and Indigenous cowboys. Our partnership with Urban Saddles underscores its innovative programs, building hope and opportunity for youth and community through the equine experience.
“Our intended audience includes visitors of all backgrounds with family-friendly activities. These programs and events are offered at a low cost to ensure accessibility for all those interested in participating,” added Bruesehoff. The festival includes food and drink for sale by local vendors, music, activities, and performances, demonstrations by local cowboy culture enthusiasts, experts, and artists, including event partner Urban Saddles and their horses. Admission is $5, and children under 3 are free.
Artist workshops are designed for individuals age 13 and older, students, and anyone interested in history and contemporary art. These hands-on workshops are thoughtfully designed to enrich participants’ experiences. The next two workshops are June 14 and July 20, and they cost $15 per person, and materials are included.
All programs are made possible through the generous support of the Port of Long Beach. “I am enormously grateful to the Port of Long Beach for their continued partnership to help us engage the community and share these important stories that have shaped our history with the communities of Long Beach and beyond,” stated Bruesehoff.
The mission of RLC, a recognized National, State and Local Historic Landmark is to, honor diverse perspectives, enrich collaborative conversations, and inspire broader understanding through stewardship of Rancho Los Cerritos’ natural and cultural history.
