Curator’s Note
A few months ago, I was visiting the Miller Reading Room at the main branch of Long Beach Public Library. I saw some beautiful hand painted bird houses on display in the room, and I asked the special collections librarian about them.
She told me they were part of a public art workshop hosted in the main branch’s Studio Makerspace and asked me if I would be interested in displaying them at the Rancho. I thought it would be a great fit for our site, since we serve as a branch of the Long Beach Public Library. The bird houses currently on display are all created by Long Beach artists. In light of the fact that Rancho Los Cerritos has historically been a cornerstone of the city’s cultural life, I wanted to use our library’s exhibit space to celebrate local artists.
We have sixteen unique bird houses on display in the library for the spring season. They will be on display through May 21.
