POSITION:                   Museum Educator – “Long Ago in Long Beach” Outreach Program

HOURS:                         Approximately 12-18 hours per week, January 8 through June 8, 2018

COMPENSATION:       $15/hour

Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site is launching a new educational outreach initiative, “Long Ago in Long Beach.” The goal of this program is to expose young students to local history through a series of engaging social science workshops delivered in after-school daycare settings around Long Beach, and simultaneously to engage their families through extension activities that can be done at home.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Working closely with the museum’s education director and outreach coordinator, Museum Education Interns will lead workshops for second- and third-grade students who attend after-school daycare programs throughout Long Beach.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  We are looking for several bright, energetic, and creative individuals with a knack for engaging children through hands-on, history-themed activities. The ideal candidate will be someone who is currently enrolled in (or a recent graduate of) a History or Social Science-related program at an accredited educational institution, has experience working with elementary-aged children in an educational or museum setting, and possesses a good understanding of 19th century American history. The intern must be a self-starter who is comfortable working without direct supervision, likes to work collaboratively, and demonstrates flexibility when needed. The intern must have outstanding communication skills, be able to work with people of different ages and backgrounds, and be genuinely enthusiastic about local and regional history.  Finally, the intern must be available to work several afternoon shifts per week, be able to lift the outreach kit (20 pounds), and have reliable transportation (personal vehicle, license and insurance) to travel throughout Long Beach.

THE MUSEUM: In public-private partnership with the City of Long Beach, the Rancho Los Cerritos Foundation operates Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site, an 1844 Monterey Colonial style adobe on 4.7 acres of land. The museum focuses on the interpretation of rural lifestyles and economic development in Southern California between the 1840s and 1940s. Rancho Los Cerritos is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. for public tours of the house and gardens. Special events and programs throughout the year.
