POSITION:                   Museum Education Internship

HOURS:                         200 hours (approx. 20 hours/week) between September 1 & November 15, 2017

COMPENSATION:       $15/hour

 

The Museum Education Intern at Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site will develop the curriculum for the site’s new educational outreach initiative, “Long Ago in Long Beach.”  The goal of this program is to expose students to local history through a series of activity-centered, content-rich history lessons delivered in after-school daycare settings around Long Beach, as well as engage families through extension activities and onsite programming.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Working closely with museum’s education director, the intern’s primary project will be to design integrated, multi-disciplinary curricula for second- and third-grade students who participate in a five-part outreach series entitled “Long Ago in Long Beach.” The lessons will be based on Rancho Los Cerritos’s history and California state content standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Must be a currently enrolled graduate student, recent grad, or upper-division undergrad with classroom teaching experience and curriculum development expertise; must have strong organizational skills and exhibit excellent attention to detail; must be able to communicate well orally and have a flair for writing social science lessons; must be a self-started who takes initiative and also works collaboratively; should have a demonstrated interest in local history and/or museum education.

THE MUSEUM: In public-private partnership with the City of Long Beach, the Rancho Los Cerritos Foundation operates Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site, an 1844 Monterey Colonial style adobe on 4.7 acres of land. The museum focuses on the interpretation of rural life styles and economic development in Southern California between the 1840s and 1940s. Rancho Los Cerritos is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. for public tours of the house and gardens. Special events and programs throughout the year.
