Collections Highlights – Painting by Sarah Bixby Smith
Landscape
Artist: Sarah Bixby Smith (1871–1935)
Date: 1910
Medium: oil
This oil painting of unknown landscape, probably California, is signed “S.H.B. Smith ’10” in the lower corner for Sarah Hathaway Bixby Smith, 1910. Sarah was the daughter of Llewellyn Bixby, a rancher, and Mary Hathaway Bixby, and spent her childhood at Rancho Los Cerritos as well as the other ranches owned by Flint, Bixby & Co. She was a prominent writer and advocate of women’s education, and her memoir Adobe Days highlights important cultural information about life in Southern California during the ranching period.
